Lydney is a town located in the Forest of Dean, along the west bank of the River Severn in Gloucestershire. One of its principle features is Lydney Harbour, with the town once known for its role in ship building, and transporting coal, stone, tinplate, and timber from the Forest of Dean.

Along with the harbour, the town offers a variety of facilities including shops, with Newerne Street being the main shopping area. Also in the town are pubs, restaurants, an outdoor swimming pool open in the summer, and Whitecross Leisure Centre.

Tourists will delight at the tourist traps on offer in the town too, such as trips on the restored Dean Forest Railway that runs from Lydney Junction to Parkend. Other places worth a visit are the RSPB Visitor Centre at Nagshead Nature Reserve, Lydney Park Spring Gardens, and the charming Forest Model Village. For those wanting to explore further afield, the whole of the Forest of Dean, and its many villages, craft centres, farm parks, and museums are within reach, as are the towns of Cheltenham and Gloucester.

With so much to see and do in both Lydney and the surrounding area, you’ll need a good base from which to plan your excursions. There are hotels, holiday cottages, and bed and breakfast choices all around the area. You could try Millingbrook Lodge in nearby Aylburton, The Fountain Inn in Parkend, or maybe Highbury Coach House in Lydney itself. Wherever you choose to stay in the Forest of Dean, just make sure this scenic part of Gloucestershire is top of your list to visit!
