Moreton-in-Marsh is a popular market town in the Northern Cotswolds, laying on the Fosse Way, a major route from Lincoln to the South Coast. These two facts aren’t the only historical links the town has though, as it also played a part in the wool and cloth industry in the 17th and 18th century, and was an RAF Training Base.
Evidence of the former is rife throughout the honey coloured buildings in the town, while the latter, the town’s military history, is proudly displayed in the Wellington Aviation and Art Museum. Other points of interest in the town include the White Hart Royal Hotel, which once played host to royalty, the Curfew Tower, whose bells were once the local equivalent of a fire alarm, and several stunning manor houses. Chastleton House, a Jacobean Property, is owned by the National Trust, and houses many rare objects and paintings, while Batsford House can claim to have one of the largest private collections of trees and shrubs on its doorstep, The Batsford Arboreteum.
Away from the architecture, there is a selection of independent shops, tea rooms, and art galleries, along with tea rooms and restaurants to entertain visitors. It’s also held a market charter since 1227, and a weekly market is still held here on a Tuesday. Moreton-in-Marsh is the very essence of the country town, and embraces country pursuits too, playing host to the annual Moreton-in-Marsh Agricultural and Country Show, with Poultry Shows, Cattle and Livestock Displays, Trade Stands, an Equestrian Stunt Team, and many more activities for all the family.
If this sounds like an ideal place to visit, then you’ll be pleased to hear Moreton-in-Marsh is easily accessible, located off the M40 Motorway, served by its own Train Station, and with Birmingham Airport within reach. There is a selection of hotels and inns within the town, and caravan/camping facilities nearby, all you need for a Cotswold’s Holiday, so why not pay Moreton-in-Marsh a visit.
