Welcome to Tetbury, an historic town in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds, sometimes given the nickname of ‘an architectural gem’. This title predominately comes from the town’s history as an important market town, particularly during Wool Trading in the Middle Ages. Today, the pillared Market House and unspoilt Wool Merchants Houses, lay testament to this part of the town’s history, and are very popular with visitors.
Other focal points for tourists include The Church Of Saint Mary The Virgin, which has the fourth highest church spire in the country, and some 25 antique shops which can be found in Church Street, New Church Street, or Long Street. There’s also a Police Museum and the pleasant Rail Land Park and Country Walk, along the old Kemble to Tetbury track. If you visit on Spring Bank Holiday you might also be party to the traditional Woolsack Races on Gumstool Hill, where teams will race carrying 65lb bales of Wool.
Saving the best until last, Tetbury is also located close to Prince Charles’ Estate of Highgrove, which attracts thousands of visitors to its Gardens and shop each year. Produce from Home Farm and The Highgrove Estate can also be purchased in the Highgrove Shop in Tetbury.
With the Highgrove Estate, specialist food shops, and bakeries in and around Tetbury, dining here is also a treat for visitors. Tearooms, cafes, and bars can be found throughout the town, along with fine restaurants like Calcot Manor, Café 63, and The Priory Inn. The Priory Inn is also one of many places offering family accommodation in Tetbury, while other options include touring Caravan and Camping Parks at Malmesbury, Cirencester, and Dursley, and period houses offering Bed and Breakfast in Tetbury itself. Hotel options include The Close Hotel, the historic Snooty Fox Hotel, and Calcot Manor Hotel and Spa.
Tetbury is a town that caters to all needs, tastes, and budgets. Whether you are a couple, family, or tourist group, you will find plenty to do here, and getting to the area is easy too. With Tetbury close to Kemble Rail Station, Bristol Airport, and the M4 motorway, it might not be too long before you’re enjoying all this town has to offer.
